Federal student loans
The federal government offers various student loan programs. With this type of financial aid program, the money lent to the college student must be paid back over time. These opportunities include:
- Stafford loans. These student loans can be either subsidized or unsubsidized; the amount loaned is determined by financial need.
- Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students. This loan program is available for parents of students enrolled in undergraduate programs at least half-time.
Federal college grants
Federal grants can also be applied towards college expenses and do not have to be paid back. The federal government offers the following grant programs:
- Pell grants. The Pell grant program awards eligible students monetary assistance based on need.
- Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). This grant program is intended for students who face exceptional financial difficulty.
- National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) grant. This program is intended for students in their third and fourth years of study who are enrolled full-time in science or math-based college programs.
- Academic Competitiveness grant. Students who have completed a rigorous high school program and are enrolled in undergraduate study may be eligible for this grant.
Minnesota state loans and grants
Minnesota residents may also qualify for student loans and grants offered by the state, such as the following:
- Minnesota State Grant. This program awards grants based on financial need to Minnesota residents.
- Minnesota Post-Secondary Childcare Grant. This grant provides assistance with childcare costs for college students with young children.
- Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF). Students who are enrolled in college at least half-time may be eligible for this program.
